‘On Yer Bike’ has been a favourite phrase for many this week, with 14th September marking this year’s National Cycle to Work Day. With over 44,800 cyclists pledged online to use their bikes for travelling to work and almost 672,500 miles also pledged, this event has been a far-reaching success.
In the spirit of National Cycle to Work Day and as a direct result of the Government’s Bike to Work Scheme, two members of the team at Signs Express (Southampton), José Ferreira and Jerzy Kopacz, have been training for an epic charity ride. The pair are hoping to raise £10k by tackling The Great Divide, a ride in aid of the Honey Pot Children’s Charity, which offers both respite breaks and outreach support to young carers and vulnerable children across the UK.
The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is 2,700 miles long, begins in Banff, Canada and finishes in Antelope Wells on the America/New Mexico border. Travelling the width of the USA, using just leg muscles and their own nerve, is no small feat for the men from Southampton, who have created a rigorous training regime in order to shape up to the task.
José, Project Manager at Signs Express, commented “It’s been amazing to have the opportunity to get a bike through the Bike2Work scheme in order to commute to work as part of my training schedule. It is really helping me towards the challenge of a lifetime.”
Signs Express (Southampton) have partnered with the Bike2Work scheme to enable their employees to purchase a new bike for commuting to work and are over the moon that this has inspired such an epic journey for a good cause. Lorraine Buchan, co-owner of the business stated “We are extremely pleased to be able to offer the opportunity for our team to purchase a new bike for commuting to work. Not only is the scheme great for our green credentials and carbon footprint, we also have a healthier team and less parking issues.”
